Ask an international student which careers are being created by the AI economy, and the answers will usually be software engineering, data science or artificial intelligence.
But behind every AI system is something far more physical: data centres.
And Australia is building them at remarkable speed.
From electricians and HVAC technicians to critical facilities engineers and data centre technicians, a wide range of skilled workers is now required to build and operate the infrastructure powering the country’s digital economy.
In July 2026, an ABC investigation found more than 1,100 data centre technician vacancies advertised across Australia on SEEK in a single month. Industry workforce analysis estimates that Australia could require approximately 8,300 data centre workers by 2030.
Yet relatively few international students are considering these careers.
That gap could become a major opportunity.
What Is Australia Building?
The scale of Australia’s data centre expansion helps explain the surge in employment.
NEXTDC, one of Australia’s largest data centre operators, is planning a 550-megawatt hyperscale campus at Eastern Creek in Western Sydney. Known as the S7 site, the property was acquired in 2024 for approximately $353 million, with OpenAI identified as the initial anchor tenant under a memorandum of understanding.
NEXTDC is also progressing plans for a $2 billion data centre campus at Fishermans Bend in Melbourne.
Meanwhile, AirTrunk, owned by Blackstone, has received approval for a 354-megawatt campus in Melbourne.
CDC Data Centres is developing a $3.1 billion hyperscale facility at Marsden Park in Western Sydney, which has been approved by the New South Wales government and is planned to become the largest data centre in the Southern Hemisphere.
These projects are not simply technology investments. They are major construction and infrastructure projects requiring thousands of workers across multiple disciplines.
Research from the University of Melbourne has highlighted this physical dimension of the AI economy: the infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence is being built by tradespeople and engineering professionals across Australia.
That includes concreters, steel fixers, crane operators, mechanical services technicians and, particularly, electricians.
What Jobs Are Available in Data Centres?
Data centre employment can broadly be divided into two categories.
Construction roles are typically linked to the development of individual facilities and can be highly intensive during project delivery.
Operations roles, however, are ongoing. Once a data centre becomes operational, it needs teams working continuously to maintain electrical systems, cooling infrastructure, networks, security and other critical systems.

The exact salary depends on qualifications, location, experience, shift arrangements and the employer. However, the figures demonstrate why data centre careers are attracting increasing attention.
Jobs and Skills Australia also identifies electricians and HVAC/refrigeration mechanics as occupations experiencing national shortages.
That makes the opportunity particularly significant: these are not simply emerging technology jobs. They are occupations already recognised as being in demand within Australia's broader skills landscape.
Where Are the Jobs?
Sydney and Melbourne are currently major data centre markets, with Canberra also playing an important role.
However, employment opportunities are not limited to Australia's two largest cities.
NEXTDC's expanding network of facilities extends across locations including Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, creating opportunities for workers outside Sydney and Melbourne as well.
For international students, this geographic spread is important.
Choosing a qualification that provides flexibility across multiple locations can potentially create more employment opportunities after graduation.
Australia Is Building the Training Pipeline
The biggest challenge is not necessarily whether Australia knows how to train data centre workers.
It is whether the country can train enough of them — and make those workers available in the locations where new facilities are being built.
A submission to the New South Wales Legislative Council inquiry into data centres from the Future Skills Organisation and Powering Skills Organisation found that existing qualifications are broadly suitable for data centre requirements.
The problem is primarily workforce availability and geographic concentration, rather than a fundamental lack of appropriate qualifications.
That distinction matters.
Australia does not necessarily need to invent an entirely new education system for data centres. It needs to expand participation in existing electrical, mechanical, engineering and technical pathways while developing specialised industry training where required.
The industry has already begun investing in that process.
Microsoft Data Centre Academy
Microsoft has established a Data Centre Academy in New South Wales in partnership with TAFE NSW, focusing on practical skills relevant to data centre environments.
Victoria University Industry Programs
Victoria University has developed an environment technician program with industry involvement from Microsoft, NEXTDC, CDC Data Centres and AirTrunk.
AirTrunk Apprenticeships
AirTrunk also operates four-year apprenticeship programs that lead to a TAFE qualification.
These initiatives demonstrate that major data centre operators are increasingly involved in developing their own talent pipelines.
However, prospective students need to understand an important distinction.
Not every industry training program results in a nationally recognised qualification.
Some programs are industry-specific or non-AQF offerings. Before enrolling, students should check exactly what qualification or credential they will receive, whether it is nationally recognised, and how it may affect future employment or migration pathways.
The Housing Problem Behind the Data Centre Boom
The growth of data centres also creates a genuine economic challenge.
The same electricians, mechanical technicians and other skilled workers needed to build data centres are also needed for housing construction and other infrastructure projects.
When a hyperscale data centre project offers premium wages to attract electricians for a major construction period, those workers may become temporarily unavailable to residential construction.
This creates tension with Australia's housing ambitions, including the national target of 1.2 million new homes by 2029.
The issue illustrates an important point: Australia's data centre expansion is competing for real-world labour, not just technology talent.
That competition is one reason companies are investing in apprenticeships and training programs rather than relying entirely on existing skilled workers.
For students, however, the situation sends an equally important signal.
When an industry is competing with other major sectors for skilled workers, it indicates that demand is being driven by a broader structural shortage rather than simply a temporary recruitment campaign.
Three Ways Students Can Enter the Data Centre Industry
For students considering Australia as a study destination, there are three broad pathways into this sector.
1. The Skilled Trade Pathway
Electrical and mechanical trades are among the most direct routes into data centre operations.
Students interested in hands-on work can consider pathways involving:
- Electrical trades
- Mechanical services
- HVAC and refrigeration
- Facilities maintenance
- Industrial systems
These roles are particularly important because data centres depend on reliable power, cooling and physical infrastructure.
2. The Engineering Pathway
Students who prefer a university degree can consider disciplines such as:
- Electrical engineering
- Mechanical engineering
- Mechatronics
- Building services engineering
- Infrastructure engineering
These qualifications can lead to roles in design, construction, commissioning and critical facilities management.
3. The IT and Technical Operations Pathway
There is also a technology-focused route.
Students with backgrounds in IT support, networking or systems operations can pursue data centre technician and network operations positions.
Some operators provide substantial on-the-job training, meaning students do not necessarily need to arrive with years of specialised data centre experience.
Look Beyond SEEK
One of the most practical lessons for students is that job boards are not the entire market.
Major operators frequently advertise apprenticeships, graduate positions and entry-level technician roles directly through their careers websites.
Students should therefore monitor the careers pages of companies such as NEXTDC, AirTrunk, CDC Data Centres and Equinix alongside mainstream job platforms.
This can be particularly valuable for students searching for apprenticeships or employer-sponsored training opportunities.
The Bigger Picture
Australia's data centre expansion represents something larger than another technology hiring cycle.
Artificial intelligence may be developed in software, but its infrastructure requires land, electricity, cooling systems, buildings, cables, transformers and highly skilled people.
That means the AI economy is creating employment far beyond the traditional technology professions.
For international students, the opportunity is therefore not limited to becoming a programmer or data scientist.
An electrician working on a hyperscale data centre, a mechanical technician maintaining its cooling systems, or an engineer managing critical infrastructure can all be part of Australia's AI economy.
With workforce requirements expected to reach thousands of workers by the end of the decade, data centres could become one of Australia's most important — and least visible — sources of skilled employment.
The key question for students is not whether these jobs exist.
It is whether they are looking in the right places.
