English language requirements

Students will have to meet the English Language Proficiency requirements for a doctoral degree at Monash University. If an applicant's first language is not English (i.e. originate from a country where English is not the official primary language), the ELP must be satisfied in at least one of the following ways: Language of Instruction (LoI) Successful completion of a course of tertiary studies within the last two (2) years, of at least two years' duration, and entirely taught and formally assessed in English, from either: one of Monash University approved English language countries any Higher Education institution for which English is the only language of instruction, as confirmed in the World Higher Education database (WHED). Monash University's Malaysia or Indonesia campus. Successful completion of a two-year Monash University-Southeast University Double Masters coursework course. English Language Test English language test must be taken at an official test centre and within two years of the proposed course commencement date. IELTS (Academic English Only) : 7.0 overall (no band less than 6.5) TOEFL (paper-based) : 587+ TWE 4.5 TOEFL (internet-based): 94 + Reading 19, Listening 20, Speaking 20, Writing 24 Pearson Test of Academic English: 65 + communicative score 58 C1 Advanced (formerly Cambridge English): 185 + Writing 185 and no skill below 169 Full documentary evidence in support of English Language Proficiency (ELP) must be submitted with applications for admission and scholarship. Monash University reserves the right to seek further documentary evidence of ELP.

Academic entry requirements

Students will have to meet the minimum entry requirements for a doctoral degree at Monash University. The minimum qualifications for admission to PhD enrolment are: a bachelor's degree requiring at least four years of full-time study in a relevant field, and which normally includes a research component in the fourth year, leading to an honours 1 or 2A in a relevant field; a course leading to a level rated by the relevant department, faculty and committee as equivalent to an honours 1 or 2A in a relevant field; a master's degree that entails work, normally including a significant research component, including at least 25% of one full time equivalent year of work, including a thesis. It is normally expected that a grade of honours 2A has been obtained for the research thesis or project. Where ungraded, examiners' reports will be taken into account; or have qualifications which in the opinion of GRC are deemed equivalent.
