Applicants must present one of the following:A cognate Bachelor degree or international equivalent with a minimum GPA of 6/7; orA Bachelor degree or international equivalent AND a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in a cognate discipline with a minimum GPA of 5/7.All applicants must meet the University’s English Language Admission Requirements for Students.The GPA for a Bachelor program will be calculated from (i) a completed Bachelor degree using all grades and/or (ii) a completed Bachelor degree using all grades other than those from the last semester (or equivalent study period) of the Bachelor degree. The higher of the two calculations will be used as the basis for admission.Ranking and English Language proficiency: At a minimum, all applicants must meet program-specific academic/non-academic requirements, and English language requirements. Admission to most ANU programs is on a competitive basis. Therefore, meeting all admission requirements does not automatically guarantee entry. About this course

Anthropology for a Future Planet This program uses a humanities and social science lens to examine intersecting threats to social, ecological, political, economic, and health systems. It is the only program in Australia that integrates biological and cultural anthropology to address planetary-scale challenges while foregrounding anthropology’s ethnographic method, prioritising grounded, people-focused perspectives. The Master of Anthropology and Planetary Futures (Advanced) equips students with theories, case studies, and tools for social engagement to understand global crises, their cultural histories, and strategies for a better future. The program fosters critical social thought and research. Moving beyond crisis narratives to analyse the political and social work that these threats justify, students develop evidence bases for advocacy and public debate, understanding how planetary emergencies arise from human social engineering and cultural values while recognising the creative responses of affected communities. Completing the Advanced Program This advanced degree includes a substantial independent research project (thesis), supported by research training in Anthropology and Planetary Futures. To progress, students must secure a supervisor’s written agreement one semester before the thesis begins, and achieve a minimum 75% grade in either Ethnography and Research Ethics Pro-Seminar (ANTH8001) or Research Design and Analysis in Archaeological and Evolutionary Science (BIAN6019). Students unable to meet the requisite course or supervision requirements will be transferred to the Master of Anthropology and Planetary Futures (MAPF).
